The Glacier Express is one of the most famous trains in Switzerland. It is even considered as one of the most famous points of interest in the country! The journey by the Glacier Express lasts approximately 7 hours and is anything but boring! It links Zermatt to Davos or Zermatt to St. Moritz and offers a spectacular panoramic journey through the Swiss Alps. Here the itinerary is really the goal of the trip; the train climbs up to the Oberalp pass at 2033 meters( 6670 feet) and then goes down into the Rhine gorges.

First Glacier Express

The first Glacier Express left Zermatt in 1930. During the Second World War, the Glacier Express had to stop. It was not working from 1943 to 1948 and once it started operating again it was slightly modified. The Pullman-wagons were removed but the restaurant was kept. During the 50s and 60s the Glacier Express enjoyed technical development and the journey was reduced. It is at this time the train got its nickname “slowest express train in the world”.
