Construction
Built in the 13th century the Palace was used as a fortified castle. It has 18 wings, 19 courtyards and over 2600 rooms making it one of the largest palaces ever. There used to be an imperial wine cellar in the basement that covered three floors. The silver collection with 7,000 items is located in the imperial chancellery wing of the Palace and it gives an insight of the culture of dinning. . Visitors’ can see the Sisi Museum dedicated to the life of Elisabeth Empress of Austria. There are over 300 personal items of hers such as her cloths, poetry and her imperial carriage. Not to be missed are the Imperial apartments decorated in the empire, baroque or rococo style.
Visiting
The Hofburg Palace is open in the morning until the evening and in the summer it is opened until the night time. There are different tour guide options for the Palace; there is the standard tour of the Sisi Museum and the Imperial apartments. Private tours are the visit of the state rooms, highlight visit of Vienna, mostly for a business client or a special occasion. Evening tours is after regular opening hours, visiting the residential apartments and includes a guide. Themed tours that are special guided tours with the themes of the silver collection, Sisi museum and imperial apartments. It is an attractive alternative to the standard tours.
