What to see at the The Locarno
In the past, the Virgin Mary appeared to people of Locarno and they built a sanctuary with a church to honor her during the 15th century. This church named Madonna del Sasso is located on a top of a rock, the Sacred Mount. It was first consecrated to Saint Mary of Avvocata and after to Saint Mary of Assunta. As years have passed, the church became a place of pilgrim. It offers a magnificent panorama on the town, the mountains and the Lake Maggiore.
Summit Cimetta
While visiting Locarno, don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy a breathtaking view on mountains and the lake. Take the cable car Orselina Cardada designed by the famous architect Mario Botta and go to the summit of the Mountain Cimetta. You will be 1450 meters above the Lake Maggiore.
Castello Visconteo
In the old city, just behind Piazza Grande can be found a medieval castle: the Castello Visconteo. The Castello Visconteo was built in the 14th century but the date of its construction remains uncertain. It was first the former house of the noble family the Visconti of Milan. In the 15th century the Rusca family moved in the castle and renovated it. Nowadays, it welcomes the city archeological museum.
Piazza Grande and International Film Festival of Locarno
The heart of the city is composed of the famous Piazza Grande. This square becomes during the month of August the most beautiful outside movie theater for the International movie festival. For this even a huge screen is set on the square, it is the biggest outside screen in the world ! The square can host about 8,000 people watching movie!
