Many famous people stayed in Montreux as the city is very animated and provides many attractions to its visitors. Each year the city organizes the Montreux Jazz Festival in July (Montreux is known as a town of music while Vevey is the town of images), the Sonchaux Accro Show Competition in August, the Christmas market and the Montreux Comedy Festival in December.

Freddy Mercury fell in love with Montreux and decided to buy an apartment here and register the album Mountain Studios. You can visit the statue of Freddie Mercury on the quay of Montreux. It has become a place of pilgrimage for his fans. Freddy Mercury is only one among many famous people who heard about Montreux and came for a visit or a longer stay. Lord Byron came to the region and after his visit of the Chilllon Castle he started to write the poem “The Prisoner of Chillon” in 1816. Charlie Chaplin set the Tramp in the movie Modern Times in the Manoir de Ban in Corsier-sur-Vevey, in the Montreux Riviera Region. He stayed 25 years in the region. Vladimir Nabokov, Igor Stravinsky, and Princess Sissi also stayed in this region for health reasons or just because they fell in love with the area.
