Melk Abbey

Melk Abbey

In German, the Melk Abbey is called the Stift Melk. It is located on the bank of Danube River between Salzburg and Vienna. In the 11th century the Benedictine monks took over and lived there for 900 years. The present day abbey was built in 1702 by Jacob Prandtauer. On the grand entry is a copy of the Melk Cross. The original can be found in the Treasury and can be viewed with special permission. The highlight of the Stiftskirche (Abbey Church) with its numerous windows, its marble decoration and frescoes by Johann Michael Rottmayr.
