In 1623,
the Archbishop founded the University of Salzburg. Many of the monks in the monastery taught music and theater at the university. The new building was divided in two. The cellar and the main floor belonged to the Archbishop and the other rooms to the Abbey.
In the cemetery of St Peter the oldest in Salzburg, many notable Austrians are buried. St. Peters catacombs are a special attraction in St. Peters cemetery. The cemetery was used in the film Sound of Music.
The church is opened daily until noon. Visiting the church is not permitted during mass. The cemetery is open for visits every day from dawn till dusk.
