The Abbey was found in 700 by St.Rupert, the building that stands there now was constructed in the Romanesque period, was finished between the 17th and 18th century in the Baroque style. Mozart and his wife sang in the mass in 1783. Mozart directed the choir and orchestra at the Abbey. St.Peters Abbey is a church and a monastery; it is the oldest community of monks on the German soil. In the middle ages, St. Peter was a writing school. In 1074, the Archbishop sent monks to the new monastery.

In 1623,

the Archbishop founded the University of Salzburg. Many of the monks in the monastery taught music and theater at the university. The new building was divided in two. The cellar and the main floor belonged to the Archbishop and the other rooms to the Abbey.
In the cemetery of St Peter the oldest in Salzburg, many notable Austrians are buried. St. Peters catacombs are a special attraction in St. Peters cemetery. The cemetery was used in the film Sound of Music.

The church is opened daily until noon. Visiting the church is not permitted during mass. The cemetery is open for visits every day from dawn till dusk.
