St, Stephen’s was named as a minor basilica by Pope Pius X! in 1931 although by it architectural standards it is a cathedral.  It took over 50 years to build due to a terrible construction accident when the dome collapsed in 1868 and had to be rebuilt.    Today from the top of the dome you can enjoy a marvelous view of the city. The climb is 364 steps but you can also take an elevator.
In the basilica you can visit the treasury of ecclesiastical objects. In the Holy Right Chapel you can view the mummified right had of St Stephen which is much adored by the faithful. St Stephen was the first King of Hungary. The chapel is also adorned by beautiful art pieces included an amazing mosaic.  The dome which is the same height as the Budapest Parliament building is 96 meters high.
