What to see at the Versailles
City of Versailles
Discover the Place des Armes, nearby the palace of Versailles. It was on this place the people of France stood during the Revolution, in 1789, waiting for king Louis XVI to accept their claims.
Walk trough the small streets of this old city which has seen several kings of France. The city of Versailles is composed of different small neighborhoods or “quarters”. Each of them has its own history. The quarter Notre Dame has an interesting and colorful market. In the quarter Saint Louis at the Corner of Rue Royal and Rue d’Anjou, you can will see the small houses were built in the typical architecture of the 18th century.
Jeu de Paume Oath
The Cathedral Saint Louis is also an interesting place to see. This Cathedral was the room where Members of Parliament met after the “Jeu de Paume Oath” in June 1789. The famous event of the “Jeu de Paume Oath” took place in Versailles in the gymnasium nearby the palace. This event is considered as the founding act of the French democracy.
Palace and gardens
While visiting the Palace with its wonderful “ Gallerie des Glaces”, don’t forget to also visit the gardens, the Grand Trianon and Marie Antoinette’s estate. The palace of Versailles had been registered on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is one of the most beautiful French buildings of the 17th century. Louis XIV put his government and his court in this castle until 1682. The wonderful gardens of the palace were designed by André Le Notre in 1661. It took several years to finish it (40) The laying out of the gardens required huge work. Vast amounts of earth were brought to install flower beds and the canals and fountains were first made of wood.
Andre Le Notre received the help of the Superintendent of the King’s buildings: Jean- Baptiste Colbert.
palace Summer Events
Nowadays, during the summer weekends, you can enjoy a musical water show at the fountains. Also some shows with fountains and fireworks are organized usually each Saturday from June to September. A special ticket is sold for these particular events.
