In the 14th Century Avignon became the residence of the popes and the extreme wealth of the papacy was manifested in an opulent palace known as the Palais des Papes.  This amazing Gothic structure is the largest in Europe and part of the World Heritage site. Inside an out the palace is opulent. It is filled with works of art from paintings, statues and tapestries.
After the return of the popes to Rome the glory of the palace deteriorated and was at one point taken over by Napoleon for military use. Restoration of the palace began in 1906 after it became a national museum.  You can visit the interior of the palace including the pope’s private apartments. There are also many cultural activities that are hosted at the palace annually including the Avignon Theater Festival every July.
